マウント・プレザント市と姉妹都市になって50年を迎えました。

マウント・プレザント市へ、18人の市民訪問団（団長：今井竜五市長）を派遣しました。

In the spring of 2014, we sent a delegation of 18 members led by Mayor Ryugo Imai to Mount Pleasant.

記念事業（Memorable Events）

千羽鶴の共同制作（1,000 Paper Crane Collaborative Art Project）

セントラル・ミシガン大学のワレン・ハレンダー教授と、彼の教え子でマウント・プレザント市内の小学校に勤務するニコール・バラガート先生から、両市の小学生による千羽鶴の共同製作について提案がありました。

当時、マウント・プレザント市の小学校で、広島の原爆で被爆し、白血病で亡くなった佐々木禎子さん（広島平和記念公園にある「原爆の子の像」のモデル）の勉強をしていたことが、この企画のきっかけになりました。

両市の小学生による1,000羽の折り鶴は、セントラル・ミシガン大学の学生が岡谷市をイメージして描いた絵画とともに、1つの作品としてマウント・プレザント市のディスカバリーミュージアム(ディスカバリーミュージアムのホームページへのリンク)に展示されています。

Dr. Warren Hullender, an art professor at Central Michigan University, and Nicole Balagart, one of his former students working at an elementary school in Mount Pleasant, proposed making 1,000 paper cranes with elementary school children of both cities.

At the time, elementary school children in Mount Pleasant were studying about Sadako Sasaki who was exposed to radiation in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and died of leukemia at the age of 12.

The 1,000 paper cranes and a large mural representing Okaya and painted by students of Central Michigan University are on display at the Discovery Museum(Link to Discovery Museum homepage).

市議会訪問（City Commission Visit）

マウント・プレザント市議会を訪問し、シャロン・ティルマン市長をはじめとする議員のみなさんから温かく歓迎していただきました。

市議会では、ティルマン市長の公式声明(PDF:122.5KB)が発表されたほか、雨天のため、室内での植樹式が行われました。

The delegation visited the city commission of Mount Pleasant where they were warmly welcomed by Mayor Sharon Tilmann and the other comissioners.

On the visit, Mayor Tilman presented the delegation with a proclamation(PDF:122.5KB) welcoming them to Mount Pleasant, and a commemorative tree planting ceremony was held (indoors unfortunately due to rain).

歓迎レセプション（Welcome Reception）

千羽鶴が展示されているディスカバリーミュージアムで、盛大な歓迎レセプションが行われました。

パーティーには両市から多くの人が参加し、友好を深めました。また、岡谷市からは、訪問団の上條美智子さんのご協力により生け花体験をご用意し、多くの方が日本文化を楽しんでいました。

このとき岡谷市が贈呈したシルクのタペストリーは、現在、マウント・プレザント市議会に展示されています。

The people of Mount Pleasant held a grand welcome reception for us at the Discovery Museum.

Guests from both cities were able to mingle and chat with one another, and the attendees from Mount Pleasant were able to try their hand at Japanese flower arranging thanks to Michiko Kamijo who led a taster class.

At the party, we gifted a silk tapestry to the City of Mount Pleasant which is currently on display in the city assembly hall there.

記念植樹（Tree Planting）

ネルソン公園の「岡谷通り」に、岡谷市が寄贈したしだれ桑2本、山桜3本が植えられました。

We gifted 2 Weeping Mulberries and 3 Kwanzan Cherries to the City of Mount Pleasant and these trees were planted along the street named 'OKAYA-Dori' in Nelson Park.

生活体験（Experiencing Life in America）

訪問団のうち数人が一般の家庭にホームステイし、実際にアメリカでの生活を体験しました。

また、それ以外のメンバーは、ホームビジット・デーに数人のグループに分かれて一般の家庭を訪問し、アメリカの家庭での1日を楽しみました。

Some of the delegates stayed with American families experiencing life in an American home.

Others visited families in small groups and enjoyed a full day at an American home.

文化体験（Experiencing American Culture）

インディアンの文化や暮らしを紹介する博物館を訪れ、衣・食・住など昔の生活の様子、侵略・迫害された歴史、現在の文化などを学びました。

The delegation visited the Ziibiwing Center to learn more about Native American culture and history, including the persecution Native American faced.

モレーコートのホームページ（Link to Morey Courts Homepage）

屋内アイスアリーナ、体育館（バスケットコート6面）、トレーニング施設等を備える複合スポーツ施設を見学しました。

The delegation visited Morey Courts, a sports complex consisting of an indoor skating rink, gymnasiums, and a fitness center.

州立セントラル・ミシガン大学を訪問し、ロジャー・コールズさんをはじめとする大学関係者のみなさんから温かく歓迎していただきました。

校内で開かれた歓迎昼食会では、コールズ学長より、素晴らしい絵画のプレゼントがありました。

The delegation visited Central Michigan University where a dean Roger Coles and other staff welcomed them warmly.

At the welcome luncheon, President Coles gifted us with beautiful paintings.

企業見学（Company Visits）

Link to American Mitsuba Corporation Homepage

株式会社ミツバ（群馬県桐生市）が、四輪車向け製品の生産拠点としてマウント・プレザント市に設立した工場を見学しました。

The delegation also visited American Mitsuba Corporation, a company founded in Mount Pleasant as a production base for 4-wheeled vehicles by the Japanese firm Mitsuba Corporation.

モーバーク(モーバークのホームページ)（Link to MORBARK Incorporated Homepage）

廃材リサイクル、バイオマス、チッパーなどの製材用機器を製造する工場を見学しました。

A visit to MORBARK Incorporated which produces lumbering machines and wood waste disposal machines was also part of the program.

マウント・プレザント市より、20人の市民訪問団（団長：ジェームス・ホルトン市長）をお迎えしました。

In the summer of 2015, we welcomed a delegation of 20 members headed by Mount Pleasant Mayor James Holton to Okaya.

マウント・プレザント市から訪問団をお迎えするにあたり、岡谷市の8つの小学校のこどもたちが、歓迎のメッセージを寄せてくれました。

Children of 8 elementary schools in Okaya wrote welcome messeges for the delegates from Mount Pleasant.

市長表敬訪問（Mayor Visit）

市役所で、訪問団のみなさんをお迎えしました。

We welcomed the 20 delegates in Okaya City Hall.

彫刻の設置（Installation of the Commemorative Sculpture）

マウント・プレザント市より、両市が50年にわたって築いてきた強い絆や永遠の友情、そして、お互いの更なる発展をイメージして制作された彫刻が寄贈されました。

訪問団の滞在中に彫刻の除幕式を行い、両市の人々が一緒に、彫刻の完成を喜び合いました。

A sculpture representing the strong bond of friendship between our cities and future growth of that friendship was gifted to Okaya by the City of Mount Pleasant.

And during the delegation's visit, we held an unveiling ceremony for the sculpture. Ceremony participants from both cities united in admiration over the installed piece.

彫刻の作者との文化交流（Culturel Exchange with the Artists Behind the Piece）

平成27年の7月、彫刻の作者であるコゼット・フィリップスさんとタイバー・ニューカマーさんが来訪し、岡谷湖畔公園のマウント・プレザント フレンドシップ・ゾーンに彫刻を設置することが決まりました。

滞在中は、湊小学校の酒井校長の提案により、湊小学校6年生・岡谷南部中学校1年1組による、美術の合同事業に参加させていただきました。

小学生による抽象的なメタルアートと中学生による写実的な絵画を組み合わせて、校内のあちこちに自由に展示し、抽象的な作品と写実的な絵画との組み合わせを楽しみながら鑑賞しました。

In July of 2015 the sculpture's creators, Cozette Phillips and Tybre Newcomer, visited Okaya to take part in discussions on its installation. We reached a joint decision to install the sculpture in the Mount Pleasant Friendship Zone in Okaya's Lakeside Park.

During their stay, the artists joined a joint art class involving the 6th grade of Minato Elementary School and Class 1 of the 1st grade at Okaya Nanbu Junior High School.

Prior to the class, the elementary school students made free-style works with alminum cans, and the junior high school students painted landscape pictures. During the class, they displayed their artworks in groups in places of their choosing around the school. It was an enjoyable opportunity to appereciate the unique combination of abstract works and realistic paintings against various backgrounds.

千羽鶴の共同制作（3,000 Paper Crane Collaborative Art Project）

前年度に引き続き、両市の小学生が千羽鶴を共同制作しました。

コゼットさんとタイバーさん、湊小学校の6年生、また、イングリッシュサロン参加者のみなさんのご協力により、両市の小学生による3,000羽の折り鶴と岡谷市の中学生が描いた絵画が、1つの作品として完成しました。

作品は、市内各所で市民のみなさんに披露した後、広島の平和記念公園に捧げられました。

With the cooperation of Cozette and Tybre, 6th grade students from Minato Elementary School, and members of English Salon, an exhibition displaying 3,000 paper cranes folded by children of both cities and paintings representing Mount Pleasant/America created by Okaya junior high school students was set up.

The exhibition was displayed in differing venues throughout Okaya, and the cranes featured in the exhibition were donted to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

歓迎レセプション（Welcome Reception）

訪問団のみなさんへの感謝と歓迎の気持ちを込めて、これまでマウント・プレザント市との国際交流にご尽力いただいてきた方々とともに、ささやかなパーティーを行いました。

パーティーでは、ホルトン市長と今井市長が、両市が50年前に姉妹都市提携をした際に使った万年筆で、姉妹都市友好確認書にサインし、変わらぬ友好と親善を誓い合いました。

元気いっぱいの演奏でパーティーを盛り上げてくれた岡谷東部中学校吹奏楽部のみなさん、また、生け花、琴、雅楽、木やりの披露により日本文化の奥深さを感じさせてくれたみなさんのご協力により、とても充実したパーティーになりました。

With gratitude and the warmest of welcome to our visitors, we held a small welcome party for them. Party guests included people involved in the sister city relationship both past and present.

At the party, Mayors James Holton and Ryugo Imai signed a sister city relationship reaffirmation with the fountain pen used to sign the original friendship declaration 50 years ago and promised to maintain an ever-lasting friendship between the cities of Mount Pleasant and Okaya.

Special thanks goes to the brass band of Okaya Toubu Junior High School who entertained the audience with their lively performance, Michiko Kamijo who crated a gorgeous Japanese flower arrangement, 'Wakana' who gracefully played Japanese zither, 'Suwa Taisha Reijin' who treated the guests to a performance of ancient court music, and Norihisa Oguti who gave a powerful Kiyari performance.

生活体験（Experiencing Life in Japan)

多くのメンバーが一般の家庭にホームステイし、実際に日本の生活を体験しました。

Most of the delegates stayed with a Japanese family and experienced life in a Japanese home.

文化体験（Experiencing Japanese Culture）

水の儀式（the Water Ceremony)

マウント・プレザント市には、インディアン（サギノー・チップワ・インディアン・トライブ）の自治区があります。

その一員であるジュディ・パンプさんのプロデュースにより、日本で初めて、諏訪湖のほとりで水の儀式を行いました。

彼らは、水は神聖なもので、全ての命の源だと考えています。

その神聖な水がきれいであるように祈りを捧げ、水を創造した神に感謝しました。

The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe is a sovereign tribal nation found in the Mount Pleasant area.

Judy Pump, a member of the tribe, organized the Water Ceremony held on the shore of lake Suwa -- the first of its kind to be held in Japan.

The tribe believe water is sacred and central to all living things.

We prayed for the health of water and thanked the Creator for the gift of water.

習字体験（Calligraphy）

岡谷南高校を訪問し、書道部のみなさんと一緒に、筆と墨を使って、英語の名前に漢字をあてた「日本名」などを練習しました。

The delegation visited Okaya Minami High School where they practiced their names in Japanese together with students belonging to the school calligraphy club.

公共施設見学（Museum Visits）

岡谷蚕糸博物（岡谷蚕糸博物のホームページ）、イルフ童画（イルフ童画のホームページ）、岡谷美術考古館（岡谷美術考古館のホームページ）を訪問し、岡谷市が誇る文化・芸術作品を見学しました。

蚕糸博物館とイルフ童画館では各館長によるユーモラスな英語解説、また、美術考古館では顔面把手付深鉢形土器などの見学を楽しみました。

Our guests also visited Okaya Silk Museum(Link to Okaya Silk Museum Homepage), Irufu Dougakan Museum(Link to Irufu Dougakan Museum Homepage), and Okaya Art and Archaeological Museum(Link to Okaya Art and Archaeological Museum Homepage) where they were able to experience the city's unique culture and appreciate its invaluable artworks.

They enjoyed humorous tours of Okaya Silk Museum and Irufu Dougakan Museum, each given in English by the respective museum directors, and also had fun looking at the ancient pottery on display in Okaya Art and Archaeological Museum.

太鼓祭り(長野県岡谷市観光情報サイトの太鼓祭りのページ)（Link to Drum Festival page）

訪問団の強い希望によって太鼓祭りを観覧し、市民のみなさんや他の姉妹都市からのお客様との交流を楽しみました。

300人の揃い打ちや屋台、会場で振る舞われていた日本酒など、岡谷ならではのお祭りの雰囲気を体験していただきました。

At their strong request, they attended the Drum Festival, and enjoyed mingling with Okaya residents and delegates from Okaya's other sister cities.

Taking in the unique atmosphere of the festival, sampling Japanese sake on offer, trying food from the food stalls, at most importantly enjoying the 300-strong drum performance, this was a memorable experience for our visitors.

企業見学（Company Visits）

豊島屋(豊島屋のホームページ)（Link to Toshimaya Homepage）

豊島屋を訪問し、資料館や酒蔵を見学した後、日本酒と梅酒の利き酒体験を楽しみました。

資料館では、林家が代々収集されてきた甲冑、絵画、家具など、貴重なコレクションに見入っている姿が印象的でした。

The delegation visited Toshimaya, a Sake Brewery, where they had a tour of the brewery and sampled the sake.

They also visited the company president's antique collection where they were able to gaze upon old armor, paintings, furniture, and other valuable pieces belonging to the Hayashi family.

ダイヤ精機製作所(ダイヤ精機製作所のホームページ)（Link to Daiya Seiki Homepage)

ダイヤ精機製作所を訪問し、工場の中で製品が製造されている様子を見学した後、精密コマの制作体験を楽しみました。

自社で開発した微細穴加工機（ビサイア）で髪の毛よりも細い穴をあける様子に、感嘆する声がしきりでした。

The delegation also visited Daiya Seiki where they were able to witness precision manufacturing operations and enjoy themselves by making high-precision spinning tops.

Of particular interest to the visitors was Daiya Seiki's in-house developed processing machine BISSIAH which can drill micro holes smaller than human hairs.
