平成27年度 マウント・プレザント市高校生生活体験派遣事業

マウント・プレザント市と岡谷市は、姉妹都市交流の一環として、1年ごとに高校生を相互派遣しています。

派遣される高校生は、約2週間、一般家庭にホームステイしながら異国の生活や文化を体験します。

この経験を通して、異文化への関心や理解を深め、将来、両市の国際交流を担う人材になってほしいと願って、平成元年（1989年）からこの事業を続けてきました。

これまでに岡谷市が派遣した高校生は約70人、マウント・プレザント市から受け入れた高校生は約80人にのぼります。

As part of the sister city student exchange program held once a year, Mount Pleasant and Okaya take turns sending high school students over to one another.

The students do a 2 week homestay and experience a different way of life, unique culture, and new foods.

Through this experience, we hope the students will achieve personal growth, develop an interest in foreign cultures, and continue to play an active role in the future sister city relationship.

Since 1989, we have sent 70 students and welcomed 80 students.

7人の高校生をマウント・プレザント市へ派遣しました。

We sent 7 high shool students to Mount Pleasant.

平成27年7月25日（土曜日）から8月4日（火曜日）まで 合計11日間

生徒全員が一般の家庭にホームステイし、英語だけの状況に奮闘しながら、実際にアメリカでの生活を体験してきました。

不安の中でホストファミリーが温かい笑顔とハグで迎えてくれたこと、そして、ホストファミリーと一緒に楽しい時間を過ごせたことが、生徒たちにはとてもうれしかったようです。

Every student stayed with an American family experiencing the way of life in an American home.
Moved by how warmly their host families welcomed them with tender smiles and hugs, the students had a wonderful time.

マウント・プレザント市には、インディアン（サギノー・チップワ・インディアン・トライブ）の自治区があります。

インディアンの文化や暮らしを紹介する博物館を訪れ、衣・食・住など昔の生活の様子、侵略・迫害された歴史、現在の文化などを学びました。

The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, a sovereign tribal nation, can also be found in the Mount Pleasant area.

The students visited the Ziibiwing Center to learn more about Native American culture and history, including the persecution Native Americans faced.

様々なインディアンの部族が集まり、伝統的なダンスを踊る「パウワウ」というお祭りに参加しました。

インディアンのヘアアクセサリーをつけて、インディアンの女の子たちと一緒に、打楽器の音に合わせて楽しくダンスを踊りました。

The students also took part in the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe's Annual Pow Wow, a lively festival with lots of music and dancing.

With feather accessories in their hair, the students danced cheerfully to the sound of drums with some young female tribe members .

ミシガン半島は2つの島からできていますが、2つの島のちょうど間、ヒューロン湖にあるリゾート地、マキノー島を訪れました。

2つの島を結ぶ約3キロメートルのマキノー橋は、世界で16番目に長い吊り橋として有名です。

また、島全体が文化遺産として保護されていて、美しい湖や西洋風の街並みが残っています。

生徒たちは、名物のチョコレート・ファッジ（チョコレート、バター、砂糖、ナッツなどを混ぜた甘いお菓子）や自転車での島内一周を楽しんだようです。

Another highlight of the trip was a visit to the popular tourist destination Machinac Island located in Lake Huron, between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas.

The Machinac bridge which connects the Upper and Lower Peninsulas is famous as the 16th-longest suspension bridge in the world.

The entire island is peotected as a National Historic Landmark and has beautiful views of the lake and a picturesque townscape.

The students tried fugde and explored the island.

マウント・プレザント市の南部には、生徒数20,000人以上、学科・大学院を備えた州立の総合大学があり、こちらでは200以上のプログラムを学ぶことが可能です。

大学の構内には、高層のキャンパスや学生寮、巨大な図書館や体育館、ボーリング場まであります。

生徒たちは大学の大きさにとても驚きつつ、海外で勉強することに興味を持ったようです。

Central Michigan University is located in the South of Mount Pleasant, and more than 20,000 students participate in over 200 academic programs at under and postgratuate level.

The campus boasts high rise student dormitories, an enormous library, gym, and bowling center.

The Okaya high school students were taken aback by the sheer size of the university and some of them even became interested in studying abroad.

ミシガン州にはたくさんの湖や川があることから、マウント・プレザント市の人々は、子どもの頃から水遊びに慣れ親しんでいます。

生徒たちは、魚や貝、野鳥が観察されるチップワ川で、岩ややぶに激突しながらも、約2時間のカヌー,体験を楽しみました。

Because there are many lakes and rivers in Michigan, the people of Mount Pleasant enjoy water activities from a young age.

The students also enjoyed a 2-hour canoeing trip dowm the Chippewa River. While bumping into rocks and branches in their canoes, the students were able to see fish, shells and wild birds.

お隣のミッドランド市で、地元の野球チーム「ルーンズ」（マイナーAに所属し、ロサンゼルス・ドジャーズの傘下にあるチーム）の試合を観戦しました。

生徒たちは、球場の売店で1ドルのホットドッグ、炭酸飲料、スナック菓子などを購入し、本場の雰囲気を楽しんでいました。

Affiliated with the Los Angeles Dodgers and belonging to Minor League A, the Great Lakes Loons played a game at their home stadium in Midland, a town neighboring Mount Pleasant.

The students were lucky enough to get to watch that game. They bought 1 dollar-hot dogs, soft drinks and snacks while enjoying the excitement of a live game.

• 日本とアメリカ、両方の国の良い所を学ぶことができました。
  （It was an opportunity to consider the positive aspects of both Japan and America.)
• 初めて英語だけの環境で生活しましたが、マウントプレザント市の人たちが優しくしてくれたので、楽しく過ごせました。
  (It was my first time being immersed in an English environment, but everyone in Mout Pleasant was so kind to us. Thanks to them we had a wonderful time.)
• 自然がとても豊かで、アメリカの広大さを実感しました。
  (The area was so rich in nature and I was able to appreciate the sheer scale of the America.)
• 今まで、岡谷市のホストファミリーがマウントプレザント市の高校生を温かく受け入れてきたから、自分もホストファミリーにとても親切にしてもらえたんだと思いました。
  (I think the reason my host family welcomed me so warmly is because many families in Okaya have shown the same warm welcome to Mount Pleasant high school students over the years.)
• 英語力のなさを実感したので、海外留学に向けて、自分の考えていることを英語で上手に伝えられるように努力したいと思います。
  (Realizing the limit to my English-speaking ability and with the goal of studying abroad, I have decided to study English harder in order to express my thoughts more clearly in the language.)
• 段々とホストファミリーの会話が聞き取れるようになり、リスニング力が高まったと感じました。
  (During the stay I gradually became better able to understrand my host family and realized that my English-listening skills had improved.)
• 学校の授業で先生が英語の教科書を読むと、スピードがゆっくりだと感じるようになりました。
  （After coming back to Japan, when my English teacher read from the textbook, I felt his speaking speed was slow unlike before.)
• 街の雰囲気や右側通行する車など、全てが新鮮な経験でした。
  （Everything such as the atmosphere in the city and cars being driven on the right side of the road was such a novelty for me.)
