平成28年度 マウント・プレザント市高校生生活体験受入事業

マウント・プレザント市と岡谷市は、姉妹都市交流の一環として、1年ごとに高校生を相互派遣しています。

派遣される高校生は、約2週間、一般家庭にホームステイしながら異国の生活や文化を体験します。

この経験を通して、異文化への関心や理解を深め、将来、両市の国際交流を担う人材になってほしいと願って、平成元年（1989年）からこの事業を続けてきました。

これまでに岡谷市が派遣した高校生は約70人、マウント・プレザント市から受け入れた高校生は約80人にのぼります。

Every year, aspart of the sister city student exchange program, Mount Pleasant and Okaya take turns sending high school student sabroad to their sister city.

The students spend 2 weeks with a host family experiencing a different way of life, unique cultural activities, and new foods.

Through this experience, we hope that the students achieve personal growth, develop an interest in foreign cultures, and continue to play and activerole in the future of the sister city relationship.

Since 1989, we have sent 70 students to Mount Pleasant and have welcomed 80 students to Okaya.

生徒全員が一般の家庭にホームステイし、実際に日本での生活を体験しました。

初日は、あいにく激しい雨に見舞われましたが、生徒全員が元気いっぱいの笑顔で登場し、ホストファミリーに温かく迎えられていました。

ホストファミリーデーには、それぞれの生徒が、日本の家族と一緒に楽しい時間を過ごしたようです。

Each student stayed with aJapanese family and experienced life in a Japanese home.

They allarrived in Okaya with big smiles(despitethetorrential rain!) and were warmly welcomed by their host famiries.

There were several' host family days',where the students spent time exploringthe area with their Japanese family.

生徒たちが今井市長を訪問し、日本語で自己紹介をしてくれました。

また、サギノー･チップワ・インディアン・トライブ出身のゲゲックくんが、太鼓の音に合わせて、ネイティブ・アメリカンに古くから伝わる歌を披露してくれました。

この後、市議会の議場を見学した生徒たちは、アメリカとはかなり違う様子に、「裁判所みたい！」と驚いていました。

The students visited Mayor Imai and introduced themselves in Japanese.

Gegeck, who is a member of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, sang a traditional song while playing his drum.

After the visit, they looked around Okaya City Hall.

They were surprised to see the City Assembly Hall, which is very different from those in America.

They said that they felt like they were in a courthouse.

岡谷美術考古館(岡谷美術考古館のホームページ)で、湊小学校(湊小学校のホームページ)の子どもたちやイングリッシュサロン参加者のみなさんと、芸術を通して楽しく交流しました。

館内見学や勾玉づくりを行った後、湊小学校 酒井校長先生のご指導により、グループに分かれてクラフトアートを体験しました。

おたがいに話す言葉は違っても、作品作りを通じて仲良くなり、最後には、みんなで共同制作したカラフルで創造的なアートが床一面に広がりました。

The students participated in an art exchange at Okaya Art and Archaeological Museum(Link to Okaya Art and Archaeological Museum Homepage) with students from Minato Elementary School(Link to Minato Elementary School Homepage) and members of the English Salon.

After touring the museum and making a comma shaped bead, they broke into four groups and did an arts and crafts project organaized by Shigeaki Sakai, the principal of Minato Elementary School.

Although not every participant speaks English fluently, by creating art together, they were able to become friends.

At the end of the project, colorful and crative pieces of art lined the room.

岡谷東高校を訪問し、書道部のみなさんに習字を教えてもらいました。

筆と墨を使って、1人が1文字ずつ担当して大作を共同制作した後、英語の名前に漢字をあてた「日本名」を練習しました。

次に、英語クラブのみなさんに浴衣を着せてもらい、日本の夏の風物詩、スイカ割りに挑戦しました。

The students visited Okaya Higashi High School and practiced calligraphy with members of the calligraphy club.

With a brush and some India ink, each student wrote one Chinese characteor and then worked together to crate a large-scale piece.

They also practiced writing their names in Japanese.

After that, members of the English club helped them put on yukata and they tried 'watermelon smashing', a Japanese summer favorite.

御諏訪太鼓(御諏訪太鼓のホームページ)の道場で太鼓の特訓を受けたあと、8月13日の太鼓祭りでは、メインステージに登場して特訓の成果を披露しました。

After learning the basics of taiko drumming at Osuwa Daiko(Link to Osuwa Daiko Homepage), the students made an appearance on the main stage of the Okaya Taiko Festival and showed off their new skills.

送別パーティーには、生徒全員が浴衣や甚平を着て、とてもかわいらしい姿で登場してくれました。

生徒たちは、ホストファミリーが持ち寄った日本の料理と、参加してくれた方々との交流を楽しんでいました。

The day before the Taiko Festival, we had a farewell party for the students.

They all wore traditional Japanese yukata or jinbei.

The girls looked especially cute! The students enjoyed a variety of Japanese food prepared by the host families and chatted with everyone about their experiences.
